Windows Server CALs - Per User or Per Device License?

When you have a Windows Server and you want a user to access that server, then that user needs a Client Access License (or in short CAL). When purchasing a CAL, you have a choice between a per-user license or a per-device cal.

What is the difference between per user CAL and per device CAL?

Per-user CAL enables one user account to connect to their tenant's servers using remote desktop services. That user can use as many different devices with their account as they wish.

Per-device CAL enables one specific device to connect to their tenant's servers using remote desktop services.

How much does a Windows Server CAL cost?

You have three choices when choosing which licenses to buy CAL for Windows Server 2022:

  1. The annual license for one user is around 77 €/year.

  2. The perpetual (buy once, use forever) license for one user is around 169 €.

  3. The perpetual (buy once, use forever) license for one device is around 169 €.

Note: The licenses are backward-compatible, so if you buy the license for Windows Server 2022, then it can be used for previous Windows Server versions too.
